Below are a wealth of resources you might find useful in your preparation for birth. Click on each title to expand the section.

Web Sites

American Pregnancy Assoc - website for the American Pregnancy Association, promoting reproductive and pregnancy wellness.

Doulas of North America – website for Doulas of North America, the largest doula organization.

Doula Assoc of Southern CA – Doula Association of Southern California website with local doula information.

Evidence Based Birth – my favorite birth website. Tons of great research about birth interventions. Helps you determine whether procedures are routine or evidence based.

Midwife Thinking – a wonderful website by an Australian midwife with research-based articles about birth topics. – lots of great information from midwives about childbirth.

HypnoBabies - excellent hypnosis-based childbirth program for pain-free labor.

Spinning Babies - a website with techniques to get baby in the optimal position for birth.

Ask Dr. Sears – the famous Dr. Sears, this site has health, discipline, breastfeeding, and attachment parenting information.

Dr Jay Gordon – great website from Westside pediatrician Jay Gordon, with lots of info about breastfeeding, attachment parenting, vaccinations, and more.

The Baby Wearer – filled with information about wearing your baby, various carriers, reviews, and parenting forums.

Dr Jack Newman - lots of information from breastfeeding expert Dr. Jack Newman. Includes articles and videos that show deep latch techniques and breast compression.

Kelly Mom – great information about breastfeeding, nursing problems, drugs interactions, etc.

La Leche League – lots of information about breastfeeding, with faqs and articles. – the magazine is no longer published, but the site has articles and an online community with discussions about health issues, breastfeeding, and parenting.

Childbirth Classes

Kathy Killebrew, 626.797.7833 -– a great childbirth education course, Kathy provides you with tons of information about childbirth and hospital procedures -- understanding your choices and risks/benefits. However, however the class will prepare you for birth in any setting. Also included is breastfeeding, postpartum, and baby care.

Diana Peterson, 818.693.1513 -– teaches classes at St. Joseph’s Burbank as well as private and semi-private one-day intensives in her home.

Dana Nassau, 310.993.7238 – teaches Hypnobabies classes in Los Angeles and Pasadena areas.

Shawna Banks, 626.353.6590 – Teaches Bradley natural childbirth classes

Support Groups

Holistic Moms Network – support group for parents interested in holistic and green living, including eating organic foods, co-sleeping, homeschooling, and more. Monthly meetings and playgroups in the area.

Moms Club International – support groups for stay-at-home moms. Groups all over the San Gabriel and San Fernando valleys. They offer monthly meetings, play groups, mom’s night out, etc. Check their website for the group closest to you.

La Leche League Groups – Breastfeeding support group. The leaders and other moms can be a wonderful resource. Groups meet in Altadena, Pasadena and La Crescenta/Montrose. Check the website for locations.

Los Angeles Babywearing and Babywearing group that meets at locations throughout Los Angeles. A great place to try out various carriers (pouches, slings, mei tais, wraps) and get advice and help on using them.

Playlab Pasadena – 1021 E. Walnut St., #100, Pasadena. 626.376.0840 A playspace for small children, they also offer parenting classes and breastfeeding support groups.

Dr. Shaun Grady, 626.355.3443 – Sierra Madre Blvd. – Very nice and gentle doctor. Supportive of natural childbirth and hands-off approach to birth if everything is going fine. Delivers at Arcadia Methodist Hospital.

UCLA Nurse Midwifery Associates, 310.794.4434 - Deliver at UCLA Santa Monica Medical Center. Group of certified nurse midwives who are very supportive of natural childbirth. Utilize personalized midwifery model of care.

Homebirth/Birth Center Midwives

Margo Kennedy, 626.577.2229 – 1416 El Centro Street, Suite 100, South Pasadena, CA. Works at Del Mar Birth Center in South Pasadena and does home births as well. Margo is an excellent certified nurse midwife with many years of experience. She was my midwife.

Lori Luyten, Licensed midwife who does homebirths in Chino Hills and surrounding areas and has a birth center. Amazing lady. Really knows her stuff.

Leslie Stewart and Catherine Williams, 818.380.6400 – Certified nurse midwife located in San Fernando Valley. Leslie is an experienced and well-respected midwife.

Gracefull Birthing Center – 2815 West Sunset Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90026 323.379.4614. Elizabeth Bachner is the head midwife and is wonderful. Many resources offered here.
